Church Reconciliation And The Sinner: A Bit More Dangerous Than We Thought It Was

Last Sunday I had the excellent luck to hear an exceptional sermon using Paul's letter to the Galatian church. Galatians is one of my all-time favorite books because it is all about living the Christian life with the aid of the Holy Spirit. As a previous "fundamentalist" I am a specialist on living life by means of ordinances and regulations, and I am deeply mindful of the spiritual death that results. The sinner and church reconciliation was a commonplace subject of discussion, not to say argument, in those congregations. Get ready for some rough news!

The preacher started his assessment by describing Paul's first admonition in chapter 6: "Brothers, if any person is trapped in any sin, those of you who are spiritual, reestablish such a one in a spirit of kindness; each of you looking to himself, to ensure that you too will not be tempted." We realize that Paul is talking about Christians who are "caught...in...sin" because of the fact that he demands that they be restored, and Paul would not have contemplated non-Christians to have anything to be restored to.

The main reason that facing the sinner among Christians is so hard is that just about everything that is biblically expected of us is offensive to to the flesh. The flesh is not comfortable with confrontation and, when it is present, calls up "fight or flight" reactions. Biblical guidelines, to the contrary, oblige us to stay involved and be humble. Here are three specifics from Galatians 6:1 to think about:

1. Taking no notice of the offender is not an alternative. "if anybody is caught in any sin... bring back such a one." This is an order. We cannot overlook and we may not banish, other than as as a last choice.

2. The purpose of addressing sin is restoration. "...restore such a one." Even Matthew 18:15-18, which terminates in potential dismissal from the church, has restoration as its optimal intent: The initial phase of confrontation finishes: "...if he listens to you, you have won your brother." The ensuing measures provided for are without a doubt supposed to have the same results. Even when the church is constrained to "let him be like a Gentile and a person who collects taxes," we must conclude that the goal is to show the sinning Christian what he is throwing away by declining to confess his sin. If and when he does so the church will embark on the strategy of restoration that is the opposite of the approach that contributed to his excommunication. Similarly, Paul tells the Corinthian church that there is a person in the midst of them whose sin is so evident that "I have chosen to present such a one to Satan for the devastation of the body, with the intention that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus." Take note that Paul's intent is that the individual at some point be "saved."

3. You must have the right intentions to be eligible to question. "... you who are spiritual, restore such a person in a spirit of meekness." Irritation and discontent are poor grounds for church reconciliation and harmony.

Anytime that we discover ourselves reacting to Christian sin within the body of believers with irritation, pride, apprehension or dread, we should promptly know that the folks or church involved are in danger from both the sin and the response to the sin. We are not capable to even get started in talking about the sin until we have dealt with our responses to it. We have to pray and surrender to the Holy Spirit until we can sincerely say that we are ready to oppose the sin but reconcile with the sinner.
